Design For The Environment

Design For The Environment (DfE) is a program that was created as a part of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the early 1990's with the goal of helping to prevent pollution and the risks involved. They can help to provide you with information regarding safer electronics to use, safer flame retardant materials, and safer chemical compositions. Their three main goals as described here are:

1. Promoting green cleaning and recognizing safer consumer and industrial and institutional products through safer product labeling.

2. Defining the best practices in areas ranging from auto refinishing to nail salon safety.

3. Identifying safer chemicals, including life cycle considerations, through alternatives assessment.

Using some of their guidelines can help you to consider the environmental impact of some of the major components of business work such as manufacturing, disposal, and packaging processes. They claim their program can help you produce goods or services of a high quality at a low cost while meeting consumers demands for more environmentally safe products. Some of their benefits include helping you to meet environmental regulations, expand your market opportunities, reducing your environmental risks and helping you to save money in the long run. EcoLogo

EcoLogo or the Environmental Choice Program was founded in 1988 by the Government of Canada but is now a worldwide recognized trademark. EcoLogo helps by ensuring that products that have met their environmental standards bear its logo which allows consumers to identify which products should be considered environmentally friendly. There are currently more than 7,000 EcoLogo certified products  around the world which are produced by over 300 companies. Their standards include a wide range of rigorous and scientifically relevant criteria that helps to reflect the entire lifecycle from how it was manufactured, to how it's able to be disposed of. Using products that have the EcoLogo symbol ensures you company is making an environmentally conscious choice. To learn more about EcoLogo, you can visit their certification page here.

LEED Green Building

They provide a rating system that has been used for green building in over 150 countries around the world, and have certified over 1800 LEED buildings in Canada and registered another 5000. So far their program has saved over 1,600,321 eMKh of energy, recycled over 2 million tonnes of construction waste, resulted in the reduction of 312,006 tonnes of CO2, and saved over 3.3 billion litres of water. "I wanted to tell you how much we appreciate your ‘pickup’ guys.  They are amazing.  The boss actually watched the driver 2 weeks ago…he got out of the truck and straightened the garbage container, picked up a bag that had fallen out in the dumping process and put it in the can, then removed 2 black bags from the recyclables that had been put in there by error (I assume). Never before have we had/seen such amazing service!"
