Welcome to step 5 of our 8 step series on how to reduce waste in the workplace. Last week we looked ways to reuse products within the workplace which in turn will help reduce the amount of waste that is produced. If you haven't already read that article, you can do so by clicking here.
This week we'll be taking a look at one of the most important aspects of reducing waste; recycling. This week's article will take you through the many reasons why you should recycle along with what you can recycle, and how you can recycle effectively as well. Recycling is processing used items into new, useful products. By incorporating the old material into the making of new products help reduce the amount of raw material required. In turn this can help save energy, water and pollution.
There are many reasons you should recycle.
Recycling can have a huge impact on the environment. Recycling can help reduce the amount of waste that we send to landfills. We all know the impact landfills can have on the environment so reducing the amount of material we put in them is always a good thing.
Recycling helps reduce the need for raw materials that are taken from the environment to make new products.
Recycling can also help reduce your businesses costs.
Here is a list of items you may use in your workplace that are recyclable:
If you're unsure about what you can and cannot recycle in your area, be sure to contact a local recycling depot. Panda Environmental can also help you come up with a recycling plan if you're unsure of where to start. Click here to contact them today!
In order for a workplace recycling program to be effective, it has to be convenient and well planned out. Employees are most often willing to participate in a recycling program if they feel it's well organized and their efforts are actually being put to good use. Start by placing collection bins in various convenient locations so that no collection area is too far out of reach. Ensure all bins are clearly labelled so that they do not begin being used for waste products. Last, ensure that these bins are being emptied on a regular basis. If the bins are consistently full, recyclable materials will end up being disposed of in waste bins which will defeat the purpose of the program.
Besides recycling your own personal waste, one major way to help contribute to the cause of recycling is to purchase products made out of recyclable materials. In the food industry, you may have noticed that many companies have made this change; choosing to make their food containers out of recyclable materials. Other businesses use recycled materials in their packaging and for shipping.
