Garbage Collection in Kitchener

Weekly Waste Removal

The standard level of garbage collection is provided by the Region of Waterloo and is offered to residents living in single and semi-detached homes. To find out when your garbage will be collected, you can use the Region's interactive map (shown below). Search for your address at the top of the page, or scroll around the map to find your location. The colour coded map will then tell you which day of the week your garbage pickup occurs, and how frequently it happens.

For single-family homes and duplexes, here's what's included in the service:

  • Blue Box: Unlimited weekly collection
  • Bulky Items / Appliances: Maximum 3 items every second week (same week as garbage)
  • Garbage: Maximum 4 bags/cans every second week
  • Green Bin: Unlimited weekly collection
  • Yard Waste: Unlimited seasonal collection (March to November) every second week (opposite week from garbage) collection
  • Christmas Tree: Collection of natural trees, usually the first two weeks of January

The Region does not provide garbage collection for large dwelling units and businesses, meaning landlords/property managers need to arrange for private garbage collection. Additionally, Kitchener does not provide waste services to businesses and commercial buildings. If you are a landlord or property owner for this type of building, you will need to arrange for private garbage and recycling collection from a hauler such as Panda Environmental.

That's where a company like Panda comes in. We provide the following waste related services:

  • General waste removal: This is for items that will be taken to the landfill and discarded in the standard manner.
  • General recycling: Recycling can reduce waste removal costs by selling recyclable materials to recycling agencies, or by reducing the amount of waste sent to the landfill.
  • Organic waste composting: Includes food scraps, paper, wood chips, or anything else that will break down organically over time.
  • Hazardous waste disposal: This requires specialized waste removal and must not be combined with general waste (it is illegal to do so). Panda is able to provide full hazardous waste removal solutions and consulting.

To help you set up a plan, Panda's waste consulting services are designed to educate and inform the client of ways that their waste removal system could be improved and give accurate breakdowns of the exact makeup of their waste. Contact us today to set up an appointment.

Household Hazardous Waste

Hazardous waste was mentioned above with respect to business garbage collection in Kitchener, but it's important to note that weekly or bi-weekly garbage collections do not pick this type of waste up from your home. This is to ensure the health and safety of those working in waste collection, as well as the health and safety of those in the community. In order to safely dispose of household hazardous waste, you must bring your waste to a drop-off location, which can be found here.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) includes:

  • Batteries, including single-use, rechargeable, and car batteries
  • Fluorescent lamps, including the curly compact fluorescent light bulbs
  • Fuel (non-transferable)
  • Paints and solvents
  • Lawn and garden chemicals
  • Household cleaners and chemicals
  • Items with Drug Identification Numbers (DIN) which include prescription and over-the-counter products, expired medicines, and cosmetics (beauty products and Grooming aids such as make-up, nail polish, perfume, shaving cream, deodorant)
  • Mercury thermometers
  • Propane tanks (barbeque size or smaller)
  • Syringes
  • Waxes and polishes

A maximum of 25 litres per household per month of HHW can be dropped off at Regional facilities. Keep Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) in the original container so that the chemical can be safely identified; if not in the original container, please write on the container what it contains. Finally, make sure all containers are sealed and do not leak.

Hazardous waste materials will feature one of the above symbols.
