The Green Bin program is responsible for the collection of organic waste and the turning of that waste into compost. It is estimated that nearly 50% of household waste falls into the organic category and as such there is room for tremendous growth in the Green Bin program. The waste collected through the Green Bin program is used to create compost, which is then used as fertilizer for gardens or park lands, instead of being sent to the landfill. Read on to learn more.
Green Bin deals with organic waste that can be composted with relative ease. This is waste such as fruit and vegetable scraps, paper towels, coffee grinds and other similar waste. View our other Green Bin article for a full list of Green Bin accepted items. In general, all food and paper products can be disposed of in a Green Bin.
The Green Bin program is a completely separate program from the Blue Bin program. The Blue Bin program first started in Kitchener in 1983 and has since grown to span Canada. The Blue Bin program is concerned with filtering valuable recyclable material out of landfills and instead recycling them for future use. These products include aluminum, glass, and cardboard. None of the Blue Bin products are able to be composted, but the can be recycled and re-used to great efficiency.

"I wanted to tell you how much we appreciate your ‘pickup’ guys. They are amazing. The boss actually watched the driver 2 weeks ago…he got out of the truck and straightened the garbage container, picked up a bag that had fallen out in the dumping process and put it in the can, then removed 2 black bags from the recyclables that had been put in there by error (I assume). Never before have we had/seen such amazing service!"
