Residents living in single and semi-detached homes have their garbage picked up on a weekly basis. The weekly collection includes the following:

  • Christmas Trees: Collection of natural trees, usually the first two weeks of January

To find out when garbage will be collected at your home, you can use the Region's interactive map (screenshot shown below). You can search for your address at the top of the page, or scroll around the map to find your location. The colour coded map will then tell you which day of the week your garbage pickup occurs, and how frequently it happens.

Commercial Garbage Collection in Waterloo

The Region of Waterloo does not provide garbage collection for large dwelling units (ie: apartments and condominiums), businesses or commercial buildings.

If you are a landlord, property manager or business owner, you, therefore, have to hire a private waste management company.

Panda Environmental, for example, provides the following services:

  • Waste Removal: Items that will be taken to the landfill and discarded in the standard manner.
  • Recycling: Reduce your waste removal costs by selling recyclable materials to recycling agencies, or by limiting the amount of waste sent to the landfill.
  • Organic Waste Composting: Includes food scraps, paper, wood chips, or anything else that will break down organically over time.
  • Hazardous Waste Disposal: This requires specialized waste removal and must not be combined with general waste (it is illegal to do so). Panda is able to provide full hazardous waste removal solutions and consulting.

Panda's waste consultants can help you set up a plan for all of the above. They will let you know how your waste removal system can be improved, and give accurate breakdowns of the exact makeup of your waste. Contact us today to set up an appointment.

Panda Environmental is equipped to handle all garbage collection needs in Waterloo and surrounding areas.

Household Hazardous Waste

Hazardous waste was mentioned above with respect to business garbage collection in Waterloo, but it's important to note that hazardous waste is not included in your regular household pickup. This is to ensure the health and safety of those working in waste collection, as well as the health and safety of your neighbours.

In order to safely dispose of household hazardous waste, you must bring your waste to one of these drop-off locations:

  • Cambridge Waste Management site201 Savage Drive, Cambridge, Ontario N1T 1S6, Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Waterloo Waste Management site925 Erb Street West, Gate 2 (second roundabout, past Costco), Waterloo, Ontario N2J 3Z4, Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Note: These locations accept waste that has been generated only within Waterloo Region. Waste from other jurisdictions is not allowed. Additionally, a maximum of 25 litres per household per month of HHW can be dropped off at Regional facilities.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) includes:

  • Batteries, including single-use, rechargeable, and car batteries
  • Fluorescent lamps, including the curly compact fluorescent light bulbs
  • Fuel (non-transferable)
  • Paints and solvents
  • Lawn and garden chemicals
  • Household cleaners and chemicals
  • Items with Drug Identification Numbers (DIN) which include prescription and over-the-counter products, expired medicines, and cosmetics (beauty products and Grooming aids such as make-up, nail polish, perfume, shaving cream, deodorant)
  • Mercury thermometers
  • Propane tanks (barbeque size or smaller)
  • Syringes
  • Waxes and polishes

There are fees attached to hazardous waste disposal, and you can reduce the amount of hazardous chemicals in your home by using the BUD principle:

Buy only what you need.

Use it all up.

Dispose of any leftovers safely and properly.

Keep any HHW in the original container so that the chemical can be safely identified; if not in the original container, you need to write on the container what it contains. Finally, make sure all containers are sealed and do not leak.

Garbage collection in Waterloo won't include items that feature these symbols.
