8 Essential Environmental Services

Environmental services go beyond simply recycling. When many think of the term "environment," they automatically think about composting and recycling. However, even traditional waste removal is an environmental service! Imagine if you just threw all your waste into your yard or the street - that would quickly begin to affect the environment around you. In this section, we'll go over the 8 most essential environmental services and why they're so important.

1. Waste Removal

Waste removal is one of the most important environmental services. Your weekly residential garbage pickup from your home, collection outside your workplace, and other commercial waste removal happens all around you. Waste removal is so important because it helps ensure that garbage does not pile up in and around your home. It also ensures that waste is properly and safely removed and disposed of.

General waste removal: This refers to general waste that will be taken to the landfill and discarded in the standard manner. It is not recommended that recyclable materials are included in general waste. Most municipalities will have separate bins for each type of waste: recyclables, food waste, and general garbage. Depending on your area, waste removal will likely occur every week, while other removal services for recyclables and food waste could occur every week or every other week.

2. Food Waste Recycling and Food Waste Collection

Food waste recycling has become more and more popular over the last few years. In the past, many households would throw away their food waste along with all other garbage. Now most areas provide households with food waste bins to collect most organic and food waste. Food waste recycling and collection is very important. Some people think that once the food is thrown away, it doesn't matter if it ends up in a landfill because it's biodegradable. Unfortunately, this is just not the case.

When food ends up in a landfill, it begins to generate methane - as dangerous gas. Methane is 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide (CO2) when it comes to trapping heat within our atmosphere. This means that when you throw food into the garbage instead of the compost, you increase not only your carbon footprint, but everyone else's too (source).

3. Recycling Services

Most people have heard that recycling is important - but do you know exactly why it is so important? Simply put, landfills just have too much garbage constantly coming to them. Our society produces a huge amount of garbage and Canada leads the developed world in per capita garbage production (source). Recycling helps to ensure that materials that can be reused don't end up in a landfill.

Recycling also has many other benefits, such as the environmental benefits and reduction of pollution. A lot of toxic waste ends up in landfills, and over time, these toxins can absorb into the soil. One example you may not be aware of is electronic waste! Electronic waste can create significant problems when dumped into a landfill instead of properly recycled, as many electronic products contain mercury, arsenic, acids, lead, and more.

4. Consulting Services

Large organizations can quickly produce significant amounts of waste - including hazardous waste, organic waste, recyclables, and general garbage. If you aren't sure where to start when it comes to your business and waste management, consulting services can help. Consulting with a professional waste management company can help you determine what services you need, how to reduce waste, how to properly manage waste, and so much more!

Panda Environmental offers the following consulting services

  • Waste Stream Consultation – This provides you with more in-depth knowledge about the true wastes you are creating. We collect samples of all waste streams, send them in for independent testing, and provide a comprehensive and proven listing of wastes classes for your facility.

  • Yearly Waste Audits – Conforming with Regulations 102/94 & 103/94. Panda works with clients to obtain a snapshot of the wastes being collected in their general waste collection program to identify areas of improvement within the collection process, show possible streams that can be diverted from landfill, and provide suggestions of areas that can save you money.

  • Quarterly Reports – Each quarter, Panda can provide you with a look at the total volume, type of waste, and current costs of removal of all wastes streams removed by Panda. Due to many clients undergoing the ISO 14001, QS9000 and other like industry certification, this has proven an invaluable tool to many. Arrangements can be made to complete this for all waste streams on premises, should Panda not be your chosen waste removal company.

  • NPRI Tracking information – Currently, for select clients, Panda provides NPRI tracking information of the waste streams removed. This is not a complete report for NPRI, but is a welcomed piece of the puzzle.

5. Training Services

Depending on your industry and company, you and your employees may be required to work closely with waste and hazardous materials. For example, you may be responsible for transporting dangerous goods, or handling hazardous waste. Though you may not think of training as part of environmental services, it is very important! Without proper training, hazardous materials can find their way into the environment or can even harm individuals. Training staff who work with these types of materials can ensure our environment, and the world and people around us, stay safe.

Panda offers select training programs in Transport of Dangerous Goods, Regulation 347 compliance, and HWIN registration. These sessions are tailored to each audience, as we understand each business has unique needs and duties. Our training programs can be held either at your facility or ours! Click here to learn more.

6. Hazardous Waste Disposal

Hazardous waste is all around us - even in your own home. Household hazardous waste includes many products, such as common cleaning products like bleach, ammonia, or floor cleaners, batteries, paints, paint thinner, pest killers, nail polish and nail polish remover, and more. If you do not properly dispose of hazardous waste, it can become a health risk to you, your family, and the environment around you. However, disposing of household hazardous waste is not as simple as the rest of your garbage.

So, how can you get rid of your household hazardous waste?

The City of Toronto outlines multiple methods for getting rid of your household hazards. Keep in mind disposal methods may vary depending on your city/municipality.

  • Pick-up by the city (free) - If you aren't sure how to get rid of your chemicals, you can call for a "Toxic Taxi" to come and take away items for you. There are rules you must follow - ensure you find out what you can or cannot throw away before you begin the process.

  • Drop-off centres - Many cities and towns allow you to bring your household hazardous waste to designated drop-off sites. Ensure you check beforehand that your local drop-off does accept household hazardous waste.

  • Community environment days - Looking for a fun way to get rid of your household hazardous waste? See if there are any local community environment days in your area that allow for hazardous waste drop-off.

Now that you know what to do with your household hazardous waste, what about commercial or industrial hazardous waste? Many waste management companies will offer hazardous waste disposal options for you and your business. Many have specially designed trucks, such as vacuum trucks, to safely and efficiently do the job for you. Panda Environmental offers a wide variety of hazardous waste removal services, including: Sludge Removal, Hazardous & Liquid Industrial Waste Removal, Industrial, Commercial & Institutional Dry Bulk Removal, and more

7. Fast Dumpster Rental Services

Another essential environmental service is dumpster rentals. Dumpster rentals are for everyone! Homeowners may choose to rent a dumpster when they are renovating their home - as a lot of extra waste will be produced that cannot be placed curbside for garbage pickup. Commercial lots may need extra space for waste to keep pathways clear for workers. Apartment building owners may need extra waste bins during busier times of the year, such as holidays like Christmas. Some dumpster rentals are made for short-term use, such as a week or two at a time. Others are intended for long-term use on commercial or industrial lots.

Dumpster services help ensure that extra waste is contained and disposed of in the safest and most environmentally friendly matter. At Panda Environmental, we offer fast dumpster rental services. You can choose to have your waste collected on an unscheduled basis (ideal for those producing smaller amounts of waste) or a scheduled basis (ideal for those producing significant amounts of waste).

8. Business and Corporation Waste Removal: Front End Bin Services

Just like residential and industrial waste removal, business and corporate waste removal is important too! Business can produce significant amounts of waste. What are "Front End Services?" Front End Services simply refers to the way your company's waste is handled by the truck. Above is a "front end loader" garbage truck. It picks up the bin with the forks at the front of the truck and transfers the waste to the compartment in the rear.

Front End waste removal is ideal for clients who have to deal with 2-8 cubic yards of waste on a regular basis. The majority of restaurants, commercial offices, and multi-unit residential dwellings require Front End service for waste and recycling removal. Larger volumes of waste require Roll-Off Services.
